Image making + Reflection

This part was based on image making, exploring relationships between text and image, and also experimenting with form and composition. Images such as the city with the bending buildings morph form in interesting ways while the wave piece works with scale.

The deer head figure was based on a skull from the Stone Henge exhibition (see Exhibition page). Hunter gatherers would wear deer skull on their heads. I saw this idea of a figure as something that represented the past the image is accompanied by "It was so much better then" which represents personal and vicarious nostalgia.

These images are all quite dark conceptually and also just in colour, I found that the dark black and white images fit the story I was trying to tell, as if memories were in black and white. While these images gave me interesting ideas and some worked as stand alone images I hadn't quite yet figured out how they fit into a distinct and cohesive narrative and nor do they suit a comic book medium style. Instead the images loosely fit together through a general theme and style each telling its own miniature story or idea.

Reflecting on my work so far led me into questioning my final outcome. My desire was to have stand alone prints accompanied by a comic book with a story about nostalgia. However the comic book wasn't coming super naturally to me and I kept leaning into singular images that resembled posters. For the project I decided to keep making images without restricting myself to a specific outcome as it was still early in the project. Focusing on the content itself and then working with those images seemed more productive then forcing myself into a specific medium.

It occurred to me that at this point in the project I have become to comfortable with my A5 sketchbook. Due to this most of my images felt very unfinished and unrefined and the size of the book itself was very restricting. At this point I hope and plan to escape it and start working with new mediums in new sizes.

Final Major Project Beginnings

Confirm copying
